Dec 12, 2024

Toronto-based Bitcoin miner Hut 8 ($HUT) is going all-in on high-performance computing (HPC), according to documents for a proposed $12 billion build in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana.

Per the Planning & Zoning Department, Hut 8 seeks to build an initial 300-megawatt (MW) Tier III data center, with the potential to expand to 1,000 MW to house a “hyperscale tenant” using state-of-the-art liquid-cooled GPU servers for AI and ML training activities.

Although details are sparse, the company plans to have the first building, with approximately 250 MW, operational by the end of 2025. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, according to the application. Local reporting from WBRZ states that the project could create up to 2,000 local jobs.

Hut 8 forecasts an all-in cost of $12 billion for the data center, Parish President Kenny Havard told WBRZ in an interview on Monday.

Rumors on Twitter suggest a potential partnership with Meta. However, no relationship has been announced to date.

Hut 8 did not respond to requests for comment by press time. Hut 8 declined to comment after publication.

HUT shares rose 12% after hours.
